Window Maintenance: Tips for Cleaning Different Types of Windows

Window cleaning is a chore not many people pay attention to. Many homeowners still use wet newspapers to clean their windows. But this method isn’t always effective, leaving black smudges, flecks of paper, and streaks on the glass.

It’s important to clean your window properly using the right materials and products. The first step is to determine what type of window you have. This will help you choose the best cleaning agent and wiping motion to avoid damaging the glass.

Renova Exterior Detailing shares an easy-to-follow leaning guide for different types of windows.

  1. French Panes

You can use either a squeegee or a microfiber towel for French pane windows. If you’re going with the latter, apply a glass cleaner to wet one towel. Wipe the glass panes with the damp cloth then buff it out with a dry microfiber towel. Dish soap is a good alternative if you don’t have a glass cleaner.

For the squeegee method, make sure your squeegee is custom-fit to the width of the glass pane. Scrub the panes with a cleaning solution then squeegee off the water using a downwards motion. Dry off the excess water with a microfiber towel.

  1. Stained Glass Windows

Stained glass windows are fragile. Dust them every day to prevent soot and dirt from accumulating on the outlines of the pattern, making cleaning easier for you.

For stubborn dirt, wipe the glass with a soft, damp cloth. Use distilled water only. Hard water from the tap might leave streaks and stains on the window due to mineral build-up.

Don’t use abrasive materials like scouring pads and steel wools because these can scratch the glass. For tough stains, use a pH-neutral glass cleaner that’s free of ammonia and vinegar.

  1. Vinyl Window

The coloring on vinyl is delicate, so don’t use harsh cleansers that can fade the color. Instead, use a solution of one part vinegar and two parts water. Pour it in a spray bottle and give your window frames a good dousing. Allow the solution to sit for a few minutes before gently rubbing the frames with a cloth.

You can use the same vinegar-water mixture to clean the glass. But don’t let the solution run down and pool on the bottom of the window. Rinse and wipe quickly after spraying to prevent water stains.

Remove the screens and give them a good rinsing as well, if your windows have them.

  1. Awning Window

Awning windows can be tricky to clean because of the way they open. Start cleaning them while closed. Wipe down the interior frame with a damp terrycloth towel before removing the screen. You can clean the screen by soaking it in warm water or running it under the faucet.

Next, spray the interior glass with a glass cleaner then wipe using a lint-free cloth. To wash the exterior, life the sash lock handle and rotate the crank to fully open the window. The window should be wide enough for you to reach out and clean the exterior glass the same way.

Lubricate the hinges and cranks to keep them working in perfect condition.

If your window has stubborn stains and streaks that won’t be removed with simple cleaning methods, call a professional window cleaner.
