By late March the composition roof of a home in the Lakewood and Seward Park stretch of Rainier Valley, south of Columbia City, had moss packed into the shingle seams and a solar array dulled by a winter of grime. Alex S. booked Renova, and Danail, the technician customers know as Dany, was on the roof on March 31.
What Dany Did
Dany's photographs from that morning show what he started with: moss in the seams across the slope, algae streaks running from the panels down to the gutter, and panel glass dulled by grime. He worked the moss out of the roof around the array by hand, brushing it from the edges of the shingles course by course and clearing what came loose, then washed the panels clean. The roof was not pressure washed, because that strips the granules that protect the shingles and voids most roofing warranties, and it never is on a Renova job.

The Seward Park end of the valley sits beside the largest stand of old trees left in Seattle, the 120-acre forest on the Bailey Peninsula, where the oldest Douglas firs, western red cedars and big-leaf maples are more than two centuries old. Add the mix of older bungalows and newer builds along the light rail corridor, some of them carrying solar, and Rainier Valley roofs need a hand with moss more than most of the city.
